Breast Cancer and Deodorants - a relationship?

Breast Cancer and deodorants:
There has been much said on this subject, across the internet and in the general media.
As with most complex medical issues there is clear disagreement. On the one hand we have many scientists saying that there is a clear correlation between the two. The most alarming fact mentioned by these scientists is that the number of cases of Breast Cancer are dramatically higher in areas where deodorants are used heavily.

"New cases of Breast Cancer have doubled in Britain from about 20,000 a year in the late 1970s to almost 40,000 a year now. Britain has one of the world's highest rates of the disease and every year almost 13,000 British women die from it. Per head, Britons are also among the biggest users of deodorants". The problem is not just confined to women. Cases in men have doubled over the past three decades to about 300 cases a year in Britain. (Source: Journal of Applied Toxicology).

So what is being done? The British Endocrine Societies have set up an expert panel on the issue under Richard Sharpe, a professor at the Medical Research Council's human reproductive sciences unit in Edinburgh and the European Commission have been monitoring and investigating the situation.

What other opinions are there? Well most of the facts have yet to be proved or disproved, so of course there are many people who are in disagreement with the above such as (the American) Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Association who said that (American) manufacturers are confident that deodorants were safe. More alarmingly is the site www.cancer.org's clear disapproval of the theory (which you can view by clicking here).
